Finding an affordable, reliable internet access provider isn't as difficult as it used to be. In the early days of the internet, dial up internet access was the primary way people connected to the internet throughout the United States. This access method utilized a telephone line in order to make an internet connection, but quickly fell out of favor because of drawbacks such as a 'busy' phone line, dropped connections, and most importantly, slower connection speeds. These inconveniences oftentimes weren't worth the perceived savings that a dial up internet service provider gave.

In the late 90's and in early 2000, cable and phone companies began introducing faster internet options by way of DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) and cable internet access. These access methods quickly grew popular because they were faster connection methods and made the internet experience better for the user.

As the internet evolved, demands for a quicker internet connection increased. Web users are no longer just checking their Email or browsing websites, but now use the net to upload personal videos, photos, to network with friends and family, to trade stocks, and can even be used to watch your favorite television shows and movies. All of these activities command a speedy internet connection to execute in a timely fashion. No one likes to wait.

Fiber optic internet connections are the newest and fastest internet connections to be introduced. This internet access method uses fiber optic cables instead of more traditional copper wires to relay information. Fiber optic internet access is more costly than DSL or cable, but provides a much faster internet connection. Fiber optic internet access is still being rolled out in and isn't available in all areas. Verizon and AT&T are currently the primary companies involved in building a fiber optic networks, and they continue to expand their network footprints.
